Generally, he liked the quiet that came with living by himself. He was able to study in peace for hours on end, and he could go to bed or wake up whenever he chose. Although he enjoyed the solitude, Bernard, as with most people, was subject to the loneliness that crept up on him during the winter months when his parents were not around. He would then spend his time observing the wildlife, the birds and the squirrels, the forest cats and the wandering bears all from high above the branches from his bedroom window.
